Ten Ways You Could Be Shortening Your Dog’s Life

8/27/2014

No one wants to shorten their dog’s lifespan, but you may be inadvertently taking years off your dog’s life if you’re not taking into account these ten things:
Picture
1. Use of cleansers and chemicals on the floor. It’s nice to have a spotless floor, but scented and chemically colored floor cleaners, floor waxes, and other floor polishers can pose a hazard to your pets. Pets walk on cleaned surfaces, where there is chemical residue, and then lick their paws, which over time can cause a variety of illnesses, including cancer. Use only plain, clean water to mop your floors. If you must use a floor cleaner, do a second mopping with plain water.

Picture
2. Poor diet. A diet of dry dog food that contains a surplus of chemicals and preservatives will eventually cause kidney and liver issues in your dog, which can lead to death. These chemicals build up in your dog’s system, especially if you’re feeding the same brand and flavor, year after year.

Instead of going cheap on the kibble, or even purchasing “premium” brands of dog food, it’s best to buy “super premium." This is like the difference between gasolines – do you want your dog on regular or high test?

4. Lack of dietary support. Dog food isn’t “complete,” no matter what the bag says. Even if you feed a cooked or raw food diet, there are important dietary elements missing. This is because no dog food on the market, or dog food you make at home, includes the kind of nutrients that protects your dog’s health at the cellular level. TELO-20 for Dogs is a chewable supplement that can lengthen your dog’s telomeres. Telomeres occur at the end of the strands of your dog’s (and your) DNA. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres shorten, and when the telomeres get too short, the cell dies.

The scientists who discovered telomeres won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2009, and since then, there has been a huge wave of interest in lengthening the lifespan of both humans and dogs using telomere-supporting supplements.

TELO-20 for Dogs also has a human counterpart, TELO-100, which I take every day, and I also give TELO-20 for Dogs daily to my canine companions.

3. Obesity. I have to admit, I’m guilty of having chubby dogs. When I was sick with Lyme Disease for several years and in bed most of the time, my dogs didn’t get the kind of exercise they were used to, so they put on a few pounds. A Purina Lifespan study showed that being overweight takes two years off of a dog’s lifespan. Two years! It’s time to hit the doggie gym – or at least take more walks.

Picture
5. Lack of veterinary or preventative care. Veterinarians recommend that you take your dog to the vet for a yearly check up, where the doctor will administer vaccines, take blood work, and do a physical exam on your dog. Dogs that aren’t vaccinated are at risk for dying from parvo or distemper, among other nasty diseases.

Heartworm medication is crucial, especially for dogs living where there are mosquitoes. I give my dogs a monthly dose of ivermectin (the active ingredient in heartworm medication) that I buy online rather than paying a fortune for a commercially prepared brand. I’m not recommending that you do this because you have to dose very carefully, but it’s definitely a money saver. Some breeds can’t tolerate ivermectin, so do your research before you dose.

Finally, you must apply flea and tick protection to your dog. Ticks carry Lyme Disease, Babesia, Ehrlichia, and a host of other infections that can cause lameness or death.

Picture
7. No spay or neuter. Female dogs that aren’t spayed can get mammary cancer and tumors. Intact male dogs can get testicular cancer and tumors. Talk about high veterinary bills! Not to mention all the needless pain and suffering. Also, intact male dogs tend to roam in search of females in heat, and can be hit by cars or become lost forever. Please spay or neuter your pet!

8. Roaming loose. Speaking of roaming loose . . . dogs that are allowed out of the confines of the home or yard without a leash are at high risk for being attacked by another dog, being hit by a vehicle, being stolen, or being picked up by animal control.

6. Lack of dental care. Not cleaning your dog’s teeth can take years off of his life. The teeth are host to a variety of bacteria that are swallowed daily. The body has to deal with all of these bacteria, which can cause stress on the immune systems of older animals. The bacteria eventually create tartar, which can lead to gum disease, and finally, to teeth falling out or having to be pulled.

It’s easy to clean your dog’s teeth – you just need a child’s toothbrush and plain water. Once a day, rinse the toothbrush and run it lightly over the outside of your dog’s teeth – no need to brush the insides. If your dog balks, add a little coconut oil to the brush for flavor. You can purchase a specific dog toothbrush and toothpaste – these are nice to have, but not completely necessary.
Picture

9. No recall command. Your dog needs to learn to come when called. This is the most important behavior you can teach your dog – if your dog learns absolutely nothing else, he needs to learn that if you call his name, he should come running to you 100% of the time. Dogs without a solid recall command in their vocabulary can find themselves in danger very quickly if you drop the leash or the dog slips out of his collar.
10. Lack of supervision or dog-proofing. Your home and yard should be 100% dog proofed. This means no chemicals, food, garbage, or medicines within your dog’s reach. No holes in the fence. No electrical wires for your dog to chew. Remove anything your dog could chew and choke on, such as remotes, cell phones, and socks.

If your dog is not reliable inside the house by himself, if he tends to chew or destroy furniture, crate train him or keep him in a safe dog-proofed room when you’re not home. Never leave your dog in the yard alone – someone could steal him, poison him, or he could dig under the fence and run away.

Keep your dog healthy and safe!

Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper Review by Nikki Moustaki, Nikki Knows Pets

8/26/2014

I've always been terrified to groom my dogs beyond simple brushing for fear of repeating the one time I tried to groom my first dog, Pepper, a Miniature Schnauzer, which resulted in him looking like he had a skin disease. I tossed the clippers and left the grooming to my groomer.

Fast forward a few years and the gain of another two Schnauzers, a Poodle, and a Schnoodle-mutt, and I've acquired a yearly grooming bill that could afford me a fifteen day transatlantic cruise with ports all over Europe. I decided to give grooming another try, which makes smart sense in this economy, and as a bonus, the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper is made in the USA.

Wahl provided me with two sets of clippers, their corded version and their Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper (which is cordless and rechargeable). After reading the instructions on how to care for the clipper--oil the clipper blades with the included oil and clean them each time you groom--I started clipping.

This time, I found grooming to be far easier than my first debacle years ago. I gained some confidence using the corded clipper, but really hit my stride using the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper. The difference between the products is significant.

The cordless Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper cuts through fur like a blade through butter--it even cuts through small mats. The cordless version is much smoother to use than the corded version, and you can also take it anywhere without worrying about cord length. Also, the corded version gets quite hot after a while, but the Lithium Ion version does not become as hot.

Pearl's "before and after" photos. Yes, I groomed her!

The Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper is also quieter than the corded version. I honestly thought this review was going to go the other way, favoring the corded version, but there's no contest, the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper wins, paws down.

The clipper comes with four guide combs, which brings me to the single item on my "wish list" for this clipper: I wish there were two longer guide combs, because the longest in this set cuts to half an inch, which is a little shorter than I'd want for my Poodle's head and leg poufs. Fortunately, the guide combs for my corded version will fit the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper, and you can also buy sets of guide combs (or singles) online.

The secret to grooming is to move the clipper fairly rapidly through the fur. Also, the fur must be clean and tangle free--the grooming kit comes with a comb and a scissor for mats and fine tuning the face and paws as well.

Speaking of Poodles . . . were we speaking of Poodles? I was in a state of terror (OK, not quite terror, but deep apprehension) about clipping my Poodle, Jasmine. Poodles have such a specific trim, and I was afraid I'd "ruin" her. Good news--she turned out fine, cute even, after grooming. Trimming the feet takes some practice, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Here is Jasmine's "Before & After" grooming photo. Her head is less poufy than I'd like, so I'll use a longer guide comb next time.

I give the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper a huge paws up! I really like this product, as well as the new Wahl Waterless No-Rinse Shampoo. If you've been thinking about trying to groom your dog, these are the clippers you'll want to take the plunge with, and if you want to upgrade, look no further. These clippers are saving me many hundreds of dollars each year, and though I really like my groomer, I think I'll opt for that cruise instead.

TELO-20 Longevity Supplement for Dogs Review by Nikki Moustaki

What if you could give your dog a chew that could make him live longer?
Picture
When I adopted my first set of dogs as an adult, a pair of Miniature Schnauzers named Pepper and Ozzie, and a mutt from the side of the road named Lulu Belle, I was still Pollyanna-ish about canine mortality. I didn’t think it was possible that they’d grow old and leave me—but they did. Losing Pepper and Ozzie within twenty-four hours of each other—of natural causes—was one of the most painful experiences of my life.

Now, with my second set of dogs, two Miniature Schnauzers, a Mini Poodle, and a chubby mutt from the pound, there’s not much I wouldn’t to do ensure that they lived as long as possible. I feel the same way about myself. I spent three years battling a nasty case of late-diagnosed Lyme Disease, so ill each day that I could not get out of bed. Aside from the medical attention I received, I believe that a large part of my healing from that illness was due to the research that I did on healing and health.

When I was a kid, all of my childhood dogs eventually “went to a farm” when their muzzles turned gray. I envisioned rolling green hills and a big red barn where they’d laze in the afternoon heat after a day of limping after gophers in the farm lady’s tomato garden. As I matured, I realized that this idyllic farm was where Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny summered, and where the Tooth Fairy had a cozy little cabin. I hoped they took good care of my dogs.

Picture
This is when I discovered TELO-100 through a friend. It’s a supplement made by Telomere Biosciences that includes natural telomerase-activators to target the major causes of telomere shortening.

What’s a telomere and why should I care about it, you ask? Good question. I’ll try to explain telomeres as I understand them.

Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of each chromosome in every cell in your body, kind of like those little plastic tips at the end of your shoelaces. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres on the DNA get shorter. When the telomere gets too short, the cell can no longer divide, causing it to become inactive. That’s what causes aging and eventually, death. If you can stop the telomeres from shortening, or if you can lengthen them, you can effectively slow down the aging process. This is what TELO-100 does for humans.

Picture
Help Your Dog, Help a Rescue: Telomere Biosciences is committed to giving back to help dogs in need! From August 19 - October 1, for every single bottle of TELO-20 for Dogs you purchase, they will donate $5 to Fresno Bully Rescue. FBR is a non-profit, no-kill rescue and shelter dedicated to rescuing bully dog breeds, from Bull Terriers to Bull Dogs.

Imagine my thrill when I discovered that the same company that makes TELO-100 has launched a canine version of their product, TELO-20 for Dogs, and that it's made in the USA. I immediately asked for samples. I am already sold on the technology of telomere lengthening, so I just wanted to make sure that my dogs would eat this chew (which looks and smells like a doggie treat). Pearl, the chubby mutt, would eat a rubber tire if it had sauce on it, so I wasn’t worried about her, but I was concerned that Jasmine, my picky Poodle, would reject it. Pearl scarffled the first chew I gave her, no problem. Jasmine sniffed at it, then daintily plucked it from my fingers and took it to her bed to devour it. Mission “Dogs Living Longer” has commenced!

Picture
The directions for TELO-20 for Dogs say that it should be given to dogs over five years of age. Pearl is over five, and though Jasmine is just four, I asked the company if the supplement was OK for her, and they said it was fine. I feel good about getting a jump on her longevity.

If the word “telomere” sounds made up to you, you’re not alone. But I researched it (Google is a wondrous thing), and it turns out that the scientists who discovered telomeres and the enzyme telomerase, both of which function to protect chromosomes, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 2009 for the work they performed on this subject at major institutions, such as Yale University. Not too shabby.

Picture

TELO-20 for Dogs directions for use: Each bottle contains 60 chewables. Dosage is one chewable tablet per day per each 30 pounds of dog. If you have a 30 pound dog, one bottle for $49 will last two months. If you have a 15 pound dog, you can split the tablet in half, and one bottle will last four months. If you have a tiny dog, you can give him a quarter of a tablet. For those with dogs heavier than 60 pounds, two tablets per day is the recommended dosage, or one tablet per every 30 pounds of dog per day, or one bottle per month.

I’m thrilled to have found a canine longevity product from a company that I trust. Because I take Telomere Biosciences’ TELO-100 telomere product for humans, it’s a no-brainer for me to give TELO-20 for Dogs to my furry pals on a daily basis. The science behind this product is convincing.

Paws up for TELO-20 for Dogs! It’s part of my "insurance" that my dogs don’t go to the “farm” for a long, long time.
