Splash Dog Shampoo From TopVet Review by Nikki Moustaki

People who have dogs with a skin condition know that it’s a top priority to clear up the skin as quickly as possible. Pustules, inflamed skin, and skin raw from itching is not only uncomfortable for your dog, it also looks and smells terrible, and can promote infections.

I’m on my second set of dogs . . . before my current dogs, Schnauzers and a Poodle, I had two Schnauzers, one of which had awful skin. He was a rescue, and when I brought him home his skin was sloughing off, he had very little fur, his sides were bloody from scratching, and he had open wounds in his “armpits” and on his belly. I tried everything to clear up his skin, including tar and sulfur shampoos (which smelled horrible) and homemade skin creams I bought on the Internet. It took six months until his skin cleared up enough for some of his fur to grow back.

What I would have done for Splash Shampoo from TopVET! There was nothing on the market like Splash Shampoo back then. Now, many skin issues in dogs can be cleared up by simply bathing the dog with this product.

What’s so different about Splash Shampoos? Splash was clinically tested by veterinary dermatologists to help treat skin conditions in dogs, and it’s also moisturizing for the coat and skin, as well as being a great cleanser, eliminating dirt and fungus.

I have three tests when it comes to shampoos: the smell test, the lather test, and the doggy odor test.

Both Splash and Splash Plus pass the smell test with flying colors. Splash, the version in the blue label bottle, has no odor whatsoever. You have you really get your nose inside the bottle to smell anything. Splash Plus, in the orange label bottle, smells slightly antiseptic, which to me equals clean.

My dogs aren’t a fan of the B-A-T-H, and no shampoo is going to make it any more pleasant for them, but it stands to reason that a shampoo’s scent can play a part in “bathing comfort,” given that dogs’ noses are much more sensitive than ours. A strongly scented medicated shampoo has got to be more unpleasant to the dogs than one that’s neutral in odor.

Also, I’m incredibly chemically sensitive, and it matters to me how I react to anything I’m putting onto my dogs, since I’m the one applying the product and snuggling them all day. I appreciate that Splash didn’t use a heavy hand in scenting their shampoos.

Splash was also a winner in the lather test. There has been a trend in the last few years with shampoos and soaps that don’t lather. I don’t know about you, but I like lather—it makes me feel as if I’m getting the dogs clean.

Splash also passes the doggy odor test. I have bathed my dogs once a week for a month with both of the Splash shampoos, and my dogs have no doggy odor whatsoever. Neither of my dogs currently have skin issues, but I believe that using Splash as a preventative will go a long way toward keeping the dogs in good condition. Also, the orange label bottle, Splash Plus, contains salicylic acid, which is known to kill fleas, ticks, and other parasites. For me, that’s definitely part of the “plus” in this product’s name.

Finally, I LOVE that Splash Shampoos are made in the USA. That’s a big deal for me, especially with pet products.

All in all, I really like this product and intend to continue using it. I’m giving Splash Shampoos from TopVET a huge paw’s up!

Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper Review by Nikki Moustaki, Nikki Knows Pets

8/26/2014

I've always been terrified to groom my dogs beyond simple brushing for fear of repeating the one time I tried to groom my first dog, Pepper, a Miniature Schnauzer, which resulted in him looking like he had a skin disease. I tossed the clippers and left the grooming to my groomer.

Fast forward a few years and the gain of another two Schnauzers, a Poodle, and a Schnoodle-mutt, and I've acquired a yearly grooming bill that could afford me a fifteen day transatlantic cruise with ports all over Europe. I decided to give grooming another try, which makes smart sense in this economy, and as a bonus, the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper is made in the USA.

Wahl provided me with two sets of clippers, their corded version and their Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper (which is cordless and rechargeable). After reading the instructions on how to care for the clipper--oil the clipper blades with the included oil and clean them each time you groom--I started clipping.

This time, I found grooming to be far easier than my first debacle years ago. I gained some confidence using the corded clipper, but really hit my stride using the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper. The difference between the products is significant.

The cordless Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper cuts through fur like a blade through butter--it even cuts through small mats. The cordless version is much smoother to use than the corded version, and you can also take it anywhere without worrying about cord length. Also, the corded version gets quite hot after a while, but the Lithium Ion version does not become as hot.

The Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper is also quieter than the corded version. I honestly thought this review was going to go the other way, favoring the corded version, but there's no contest, the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper wins, paws down.

The clipper comes with four guide combs, which brings me to the single item on my "wish list" for this clipper: I wish there were two longer guide combs, because the longest in this set cuts to half an inch, which is a little shorter than I'd want for my Poodle's head and leg poufs. Fortunately, the guide combs for my corded version will fit the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper, and you can also buy sets of guide combs (or singles) online.

The secret to grooming is to move the clipper fairly rapidly through the fur. Also, the fur must be clean and tangle free--the grooming kit comes with a comb and a scissor for mats and fine tuning the face and paws as well.

Speaking of Poodles . . . were we speaking of Poodles? I was in a state of terror (OK, not quite terror, but deep apprehension) about clipping my Poodle, Jasmine. Poodles have such a specific trim, and I was afraid I'd "ruin" her. Good news--she turned out fine, cute even, after grooming. Trimming the feet takes some practice, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Here is Jasmine's "Before & After" grooming photo. Her head is less poufy than I'd like, so I'll use a longer guide comb next time.

I give the Wahl Lithium Ion Pro Series Pet Clipper a huge paws up! I really like this product, as well as the new Wahl Waterless No-Rinse Shampoo. If you've been thinking about trying to groom your dog, these are the clippers you'll want to take the plunge with, and if you want to upgrade, look no further. These clippers are saving me many hundreds of dollars each year, and though I really like my groomer, I think I'll opt for that cruise instead.

Soggy Doggy Doormat and Shammy Review: by Nikki Moustaki, Nikki Knows Pets

Oh, how do I love thee, Soggy Doggy, let me count the ways . . . first, you dry my dogs so well after a bath, I no longer have to use five towels. Secondly, you are so plushy and adorable, I use your doormat as a bathmat so that I can sink my own footsies into your soft material when I get out of the shower (and I love the bone-shape motif, perfect for a dog-obsessed household). Third, you are machine washable and dryable, and your quality does not fade after a ton of washing.
What more can I say? I love love love this product! The Soggy Doggy Shammy is the perfect after-bath "towel," even if you have multiple dogs. I can thoroughly dry one mutt, one Schnauzer, and a Poodle with ONE Soggy Doggy Shammy and one Soggy Doggy Doormat. My dogs love to jump on the doormat and rub themselves dry -- I don't have to do anything!

I haven't tried the Soggy Doggy Slopmat yet, but I hope to do so soon -- I bet it's as wonderful as the shammy and doormat.

Huge paws up for Soggy Doggy!

From the Soggy Doggy Website:

Each of the “noodles” in the Soggy Doggy Doormat® and Soggy Doggy Super Shammy is made from millions of textured, ultrafine strands woven together, so the surface area of these products is much greater than meets the eye! The expansive surface area is the secret to microfiber chenille’s tremendous absorbing power and super-fast drying!

The microfiber chenille blend allows the Soggy Doggy Doormats® and Super Shammys to soak up water and dirt like a sponge! The doormats absorb 5x more water than regular cotton doormats and the Super Shammy can hold up to 7x its weight in water! The material is exceptionally hard-working and goes right in the washer and dryer! But the chenille also makes it velvety-soft and gentle under delicate paws and bellies.
