There are pet products I like, pet products I love, and then there are pet products that I want to take out to dinner on Valentine’s Day – in this case, it’s the Piddle Place who’s going to sit across from me at a candlelit table in a French restaurant – my boyfriend will have to move over. Isn’t he going to be delighted?
The Piddle Place has saved my floors, my health, and in some respects, my sanity. Imagine a fourth floor walk-up in New York City on a day when it’s 21 degrees outside, the snow has turned to ice, it’s sleeting outside, and the dogs are looking at me with their “I really have to pee-pee" faces. It’s nice to be able to rely on an indoor potty solution that works. It’s not a replacement for walks, but all of us have those days when walks will be few and short. |

I like the fact that my dogs can piddle between walks. I think it’s healthier for their bladders. I wouldn’t like to be beholden to someone else for bathroom breaks. Let them “go” when nature calls.
I’ve tried several types of these pee trays, and this one is my favorite thus far. First, it’s the most attractive. There’s no visible, stained puppy pad mucking up your décor – in fact, there’s no puppy pad at all. Gone are the days of paying for wee pads, and the horror of an empty bag when you need them. Also, Pearl rips them up. I’ve come home many times to a puppy pad massacre.
With the Piddle Place, there’s also no giant boxy tray taking up lots of space. The Piddle Place is sleek (19”W x 30”L x 1.5”H) and doesn’t look like what it’s intended for, partially because the grass-like pad on the surface isn’t Astroturf – it’s a kind of squishy woven plastic that lets moisture through and doesn’t hold odors. It also stays in place very well, which is important. The “turf” also provides a layer between any moisture and your dogs paws, so you won’t have urine puppy paw prints marking your floors.
The rest of the unit is basically a hollow receptacle with a watertight spout on one end that you can open and close to keep the liquid in or let it out. Below the “turf” is a slightly graded surface that leads to a small drain, and there are grooves that keep moisture away from your dog's paws.
This unit is durable. I’ve had other trays that broke or chipped after a while, and though I liked those as well, they started looking too shabby to keep using in a prominent place in my apartment (the Piddle Place is in a corner of my living room).
Piddle Place makes Bio-Enzyme packs, which contain a small amount of concentrated, scented liquid enzymes. Cut open the packet, mix it with a cup of water, then pour into the unit’s drain – or, you can do what I do, and pour the packet’s contents into the drain and then pour a little water in – works fine.

I empty my Piddle Place about once every ten days – it’s pretty full by then. And there’s zero odor. None. What I empty from the unit is vintage pee, extremely ripe when I pour it out into the toilet, but the Piddle Place does not smell when it’s in use. That’s key to keeping an indoor dog toilet. You don’t want it to smell on your balcony or on your deck, either, and it won’t if you use the enzymes.
Truth be told, I tried other enzyme products inside the Piddle Place, and they worked pretty well too, so if you run out of the Piddle Place Bio-enzyme, you can always use whatever’s handy, as long as it has that enzyme action. I prefer to use the Piddle Place brand when I have it. |
Cleaning the Piddle Place is extremely easy. Carefully walk the unit to wherever you want to empty it, spout up. Tip the spout into the toilet, bathtub drain, or the place of your choosing, turn the level on the nozzle, stand back, and hold your breath for a few seconds until it empties (if you’re in an enclosed space). Next, turn on your hose, shower, or whatever water source you’re using to clean the Piddle Place, and wash it off. I’ve never had to scrub it – I just rinse it very well inside and out with soap and water.
The plastic, amazingly, does not hold the odor, as it did in another unit I tried, which became stinky after a while. The Piddle Place smells new after it’s washed with soap and water (well, I haven’t stuck my nose into it, but from a few feet away, it’s odorless). I also wash the grass with soap and water, front and back, to make sure there are no little pieces of poop left on it (yes, my dogs poop on it; I’m telling you, this thing makes my life easier!). Piddle Place also makes an “in-between washing” enzyme treatment spray for the “turf” part of the unit. Personally, I’m not a fan of any scents and I’m chemically sensitive, so I wasn’t a fan of the Lemongrass/Eucalyptus smell, which was kind of flowery. Not bad at all, but I’d rather smell nothing. People who like to burn scented candles and have plug in air fresheners will love it, and after about three days the scent fades anyway. The Bio-enzyme has the same scent, but since it’s going inside the unit, not on it, I don’t smell it. I read some reviews where people love the spray, so I think it’s a personal choice. |
A couple of caveats – if you move the Piddle Place around, even a little, check the valve to make sure it’s still in the closed position until you want to open it. Also, the Piddle Place seems to make a comfy bed – Pearl likes to lay on it to eat her bones and I have to shoo her off of it. Silly girl!
Training your dog to use Piddle Place is easy if she’s already trained to puppy pads or another tray. Simply put the Piddle Place in the same spot and rub a urine soiled puppy pad on the grass part of the tray. Or, you can fold the used puppy pad and put it beneath the grass, or place it on top of the grass for starters. You dog should quickly understand that the Piddle Place is where she conducts business. |
Other reasons why I like the Piddle Place:
I give the Piddle Place a huge paws up! Highly recommended. |

From the Piddle Place Website:
The Piddle Place is proudly constructed in the USA out of sturdy molded plastic. While the unit can hold over 100 lbs, the length of the Piddle Place will decide we are right for your furry friend. If your dog is over 28 inches long, their hind end might hang over the Piddle Place and leave a mess. The Piddle Place will safely contain a gallon of pet waste, but we recommend draining the unit once a week for most dogs.
The Piddle Place dog toilet is designed to compliment the look of your home. Not meant to replace walking your pet, the Piddle Place provides a comfortable sanitary environment for your pet to relieve themselves while waiting for your return or when weather does not permit a trip outdoors. Also perfect for house breaking, those that travel with their pets, or those who bring pets along on boats, RVs or the like. Piddle Place is also great for the handicapped or elderly, who find walking a pet a challenge.
